  As a result, "Vamachara" is not an album to understand easily. Surely you are impressed by the first listen, but there are much more levels to discover every time you drown in its black waters. It's a perfect mix of the old school occult rock masters of the 70's with black metal form and a great sound production, exactly fitting the album's musical structure. "Vamachara" is like an old grimoire, the more you study its elements, the higher you reach.

  One of Australia's best kept secrets is Armoured Angel, a thrash band from the dark days of the 1980s. Their only full-length, Angel of the Sixth Order, is an even better kept secret than their earlier career. While it lacks the Green brothers, who had been a big part of Armoured Angel, participating in every recording except the very first demo and this, the band's very last recording. The approach here is quite different from the unreleased demo from 1995, the rather slow-paced and anthemic songs aren't on the focus here. With the Greens gone, Lucy has taken a step backwards and returned to the sound of the older recordings for inspiration. An absolutely brilliant album to say the least.

  Since it took like forever to make this album I seriously doubt Black Crucifixion will ever release anything else, but this album would be a pretty good tombstone to one of metal's more curious bands. All the fans of mid-era Katatonia or Paradise Lost would probably enjoy this, as do those who delight in gothic music in general. But really I recommend it to just about anyone; if you can suspend your grimness and brutality for a little while, it's a very good listen that stays interesting through many a play.

You can easily hear some melodies from the guitars that could easily fit into Drudkh, but there are also the raw sections of the album that would suit some of the Hate Forest-albums.   The band plays short, choppy, staccato guitar riffs that call to mind Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer, over a galloping bass line, very similar to the style of Iron Maiden's Steve Harris, bringing the best of both styles together into a very well-done whole. The bass can always be heard very well in the mix, which is a good thing on this album because it is a major highlight. The guitar solos are incendiary, yet another influence from Maiden and their ilk. The drums are done capably but are not an outstanding feature of the music. They are played well, but the real focus of the band is on the riffing and the vocals.

  Gallowbraids have made sure everything sounds their own in its own respect. Sure they take great influence from Agalloch and some Ulver, but they give it their own sense of originality. After all, how many bands do you know that sounds like these guys? In my experience, not very many and that’s what makes this stand above the rest. From this view, Gallowbraid has proven themselves, as well as having a very promising future. I’m looking forward to what they decide to release next, because now… they have some pretty big shoes to fill.

  I'm always impressed with bands that manage to take an established sound like black metal, flay it to its bare roots and conjure an album of unspeakable evil and hostility. UK 3-piece Ghast have managed to do just this on their debut, with five great tracks of sludge mired black metal which occasionally lapse into powerful doom.
  The sound here is phenomenal. Simple and raw but possessing a depth rarely heard for this style. It is the sound of waves of despair lapping at a cold shore of misanthropy. Yet as disturbing and grim as this album is, it's actually kind of catchy. Simply stated it's one of the best black AND doom metal debuts I've heard all year, and I am looking forward to a great many more.

  This is the first EP from Welsh black metallers Ghast, called Terrible Cemetery. It is the follow up to the 2008 album, (in my opinion essential,) May The Curse Bind.
  Ghast mixed black metal and doom metal perfectly. The atmosphere is great, its not like atmospheric black metal as such, but it does have an certain feel to it, which I think is helped by the production. Speaking of which, it’s a quite clean production, but don't confuse that for overproduced & polished, it still has a gritty black metal feel to it, but with everything nice and audible.

  Within Black Metal, France has consistently been one of the most interesting and impressive regions.
  It all began in early nineties and among the very first French Black Metal bands (and an early example of the emerging and maturing Second Wave) was Gorgon.
  Gorgon formed in 1991 and were initially inspired by bands like Venom, Samael, and Impaled Nazarene. The first demo was 1992's “Call From Unknown Depths”. This quickly led to Wounded Love putting out the infamous EP “Immortal Horde” in 1993.
  Their first album “The Lady Rides a Black Horse” was recorded in 1994 and released in 1995. It has become an underground Black Metal landmark for those who managed to hear it at the time.

  LIK had been temporarily shelved after three albums, all of which were good, but peaking early on the 2003 debut Må Ljuset Aldrig Nå Oss Mer. However, as the title to this new full-length implies, some further inspiration has been drawn out of the project's uncanny mix of black metal and dark, rustic rock, and I'm once again impressed with the unusual aesthetics present here. Most of the riffs are the sort you'd find in traditional folk/black metal or Gothic/punk rock, but mixed with such an organic appeal that they glide lovingly beneath the dour, low-pitch of the vocals, and The Second Wind is at once both festive and unforgiving in its bleak disposition.

Shortly after the release of Von’s “Satanic Blood” demo, the members of Von shifted their focus to another project that would come to be known as Sixx. The obscure “Sister Devil” demo, the only recording produced under the Sixx moniker, represents a distinctly different approach to music, but retains, nonetheless, many of the same elements that characterize the style of Von. Like two poisons that attack the body in different yet equally lethal ways, Von and Sixx produce similar effects on the listener while pursuing two divergent paths of execution. Sixx do not play black metal, but the atmosphere cultivated on “Sister Devil” is every bit as nihilistic and void of light as on “Satanic Blood.” Sixx instead play a style of music most closely resembling the genre known as death-rock. And while traces of Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Samhain, and Joy Division can be heard in Sixx’s music, “Sister Devil” conveys a decidedly more satanic approach than any of the aforementioned bands’ work. Also, in much the same way that Von utilized trance-inducing repetition as one of its primary tools, Sixx also rely on the same technique with similar results. The instruments and vocals are recorded clean and the focus is on the melodic character of the songs. The melodies employed, however, are pure in their bleakness. Lyrically, Sixx revel in themes that could have been equally applicable in a black metal context, and the listener will notice that “Sister Devil” also features spoken word interludes like those heard in the recordings of Von. Moreover, while the performance of the instruments may be clean, the lo-fidelity recording quality demonstrates the same stark simplicity of the Von recordings. When Sixx recorded “Sister Devil” they were a band without an audience. These were not the highly regarded forefathers of black metal that they are perceived as today, but rather, young musicians struggling to find a voice in an era in which no other band’s approach to music adequately represented their vision. For black metal purists, “Sister Devil” may only be a curiosity to examine for its historical relevance. Even for this purpose it is valuable. Hearing Sixx certainly elucidates many of the influences that coalesced in the sound of Von. For those listeners who place value in genres of music related to, but still outside the sphere of metal, this demo is of even greater importance. It stands up to the recordings of other bands within the death-rock genre of music, but still demonstrates an appreciation for the aesthetics that were influencing black metal at that time. Indeed, Sixx’s music would stand on its own even if it were not related to Von. Whatever purpose one may have for stepping into the suicidal and empty universe measured out by their music, the effect of Sixx’s “Sister Devil” demo is profound. After having been completely abandoned and forgotten for 18 years, NWN!, with the cooperation of Goat and Kill from Von, has unearthed this legendary demo which is as potent today as it would have been when it was originally recorded. Remastered and accompanied by new artwork, “Sister Devil” at last will receive the presentation and distribution it rightfully deserves."

  Well, it's now official: old school death metal has gone viral. When a wave such as this is suddenly reclaimed by rock star labels like Century Media, you know the numbers must be there to back it. Thankfully, for all of us, this is a far less annoying development than the death- and fashioncore we've been abused with for years. In truth, it is quite welcome, and if artists like Israel's Sonne Adam continue to ooze forth from the pores of this genre of rediscovery, then we're in for a world of delectable darkness and damnation. For most, the quality of this band will probably come as an unexpected shock; but I'm honestly not so surprised, as they released a decent EP last year (Armed With Hammers), and one of the guitar players is also a member of Tsorer, a vile and excellent black metal duo who dropped their amazing debut (Return to Sodom) last year.
  Excellent death metal from Israel? Who would have thought! But if there is a place where death is ever more present, it's Israel.

  Sorcery back 1991 when this album was released, played very effective, if simplistic, death/thrash. Quality musicianship of course was not the concern here, and creating the most morbid music possible was really all that mattered. Throughout the ten track terror ride, the band thrashes the listener with darkened, meaty riffs coupled with ghastly screeches from beyond. Add truly sinister samples and interludes, and the listener is simply captivated by the creativity displayed here. This is about as old-school as you can get when it comes to classic death metal. Unfortunately, Sorcery never did opted for a second full-length and like many bands before them, faded into obscurity.

  Wolves evolve yet again. This time around, it is actually a good evolution. This EP is very well done, and very professional. It's also one of the better Ulver releases since the band left black metal if you ask me. This is melancholic music and it really does fit its title, “A Quick Fix of Melancholy.” I really wish that Ulver would just stick to this kind of sound when Garm is at his best, instead of something like “Shadows of the Sun” where Garm is very passionless, and the music isn’t as effective. So Ulver, I beg you to make more beautiful and soothing music like this, or go back to black metal!
