  Cirrhus' half is dense and mechanical but covered in a dark melodic haze with strained shouting buried inside. From the same period as the Cirrhus EP, it is protective sounding music that's far from any pro-social attitude that thinks it's right to unite people in this overconnected "one for all" world habitat. Both Eunuch and Cirrhus find equally exotic but uniquely powerful melodic ideas inside of a rough sound quality, but don't be misled... this is beauty in the most traditional sense.

  I don’t normally judge a book by its cover but when I first laid my eyes on the cover of Grey’s debut LP I felt like "Sisters of the Wyrd" was going to be some sort of hippie/ jam friendly/ stoner rock masquerading as doom with three women who looked more like leftovers from the 70s who crawled out of a trailer to record this album. BUT!.....
  For an all girl trio that’s playing some pretty extreme doom metal, Grey seems to have received little to no hype. I can’t understand that, especially when something as overrated as Gallhammer get so much press and attention. Maybe Grey need to be wearing Celtic Frost and Amebix t-shirts too but at the end of the day this is a quality band that really doesn’t need to do anything more than play their music to blow minds. Still, if you must, then think of them as a less hyped and far superior version of Gallhammer and plunge right in.

  Anybody into old-school death metal and the works of HP Lovecraft should definitely purchase this ep, a solid underground metal release that I couldn’t recommend more.

This album has the distinction of featuring the final harsh vocal performance of Jonas Renkse, as he had tortured his throat beyond repair.

  Root’s “The Revelation” is unquestionably one of the most mysterious releases in this enigmatic band’s catalog. Although it was originally never intended to be officially released, it was eventually unearthed and released on CD. That CD, however, does no justice to the music it contains and was not even acknowledged as an official release by some band members. The details surrounding the recording of “The Revelation” are nearly as obscure as the music itself. Root’s debut album, “Zjeveni,” was released in 1990 and was recorded entirely in Czech. When Root began recording their second album they chose to present the lyrics in English in order to spread their message of darkness even further. At the same time, the idea was presented to also re-record the “Zjeveni” album with English vocals. Because it was never intended for actual release, this version appears only in a raw, unmixed form. In many ways, this primitive sound is more akin to Root’s sound on their demos than to that of their early albums. Another curious element of “The Revelation” is the inclusion of additional intros recorded and added to the album that are not present on “Zjeveni.” Virtually nothing else is known about how this particular recording was made or discovered. It does, however, deserve a formal place alongside the many other classic Root releases and this proper issue of “The Revelation” should ensure that it achieves its rightful status.

  Four years have passed since Czech masters Root unleashed their last sermon Daemon Viam Invenient, which saw a broadening of their sound into a more melodic clime, and met with very mixed reactions from a niche audience weaned on occult black metal classics Hell Symphony, Kärgeräs, & The Temple in the Underworld. These gentlemen are no strangers to adventure or experimentation, of course, with the charismatic front man Jirí 'Big Boss' himself involved in a solo project that spans from Root's black fundamentals to Gothic folk/pop, but I had the distinct impression that a 'return to the basics' might be in action, and in part, this sums up Heritage of Satan in a nutshell. The Czechs haven't abandoned their broader vision, per se, but a lot of the material here seems quite ritualistic and straightforward, more 'evil' if you will than the last album.

It's that guitar work that takes the listener for an emotional roller coaster, especially on songs like "Burning Voice of Adoration", which has the ability to stir up absolute sadness and sorrow. As for production, the formula is still the same. Turn everything up beyond reason and comprehension, almost to a breaking point. Seriously, prolonged exposure to this will probably make your houseplants wilt and die. The major difference between Let The Devil In, and the older releases is that you don't have to try as hard to distinguish what's going on musically. It's still noisy and dirty as ever, but also more structured."

Shortly after the release of Von’s “Satanic Blood” demo, the members of Von shifted their focus to another project that would come to be known as Sixx. The obscure “Sister Devil” demo, the only recording produced under the Sixx moniker, represents a distinctly different approach to music, but retains, nonetheless, many of the same elements that characterize the style of Von. Like two poisons that attack the body in different yet equally lethal ways, Von and Sixx produce similar effects on the listener while pursuing two divergent paths of execution. Sixx do not play black metal, but the atmosphere cultivated on “Sister Devil” is every bit as nihilistic and void of light as on “Satanic Blood.” Sixx instead play a style of music most closely resembling the genre known as death-rock. And while traces of Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Samhain, and Joy Division can be heard in Sixx’s music, “Sister Devil” conveys a decidedly more satanic approach than any of the aforementioned bands’ work. Also, in much the same way that Von utilized trance-inducing repetition as one of its primary tools, Sixx also rely on the same technique with similar results. The instruments and vocals are recorded clean and the focus is on the melodic character of the songs. The melodies employed, however, are pure in their bleakness. Lyrically, Sixx revel in themes that could have been equally applicable in a black metal context, and the listener will notice that “Sister Devil” also features spoken word interludes like those heard in the recordings of Von. Moreover, while the performance of the instruments may be clean, the lo-fidelity recording quality demonstrates the same stark simplicity of the Von recordings. When Sixx recorded “Sister Devil” they were a band without an audience. These were not the highly regarded forefathers of black metal that they are perceived as today, but rather, young musicians struggling to find a voice in an era in which no other band’s approach to music adequately represented their vision. For black metal purists, “Sister Devil” may only be a curiosity to examine for its historical relevance. Even for this purpose it is valuable. Hearing Sixx certainly elucidates many of the influences that coalesced in the sound of Von. For those listeners who place value in genres of music related to, but still outside the sphere of metal, this demo is of even greater importance. It stands up to the recordings of other bands within the death-rock genre of music, but still demonstrates an appreciation for the aesthetics that were influencing black metal at that time. Indeed, Sixx’s music would stand on its own even if it were not related to Von. Whatever purpose one may have for stepping into the suicidal and empty universe measured out by their music, the effect of Sixx’s “Sister Devil” demo is profound. After having been completely abandoned and forgotten for 18 years, NWN!, with the cooperation of Goat and Kill from Von, has unearthed this legendary demo which is as potent today as it would have been when it was originally recorded. Remastered and accompanied by new artwork, “Sister Devil” at last will receive the presentation and distribution it rightfully deserves."

  I’ve always considered Shadows In The Deep as the darkest and gloomiest album Unleashed ever released in their quite long career. The debut made them jump on the big swedish death metal train and now, just one year after, they are back with this album to annihilate us once again through really heavy and dark music. Unleashed has always been quite different from the other death metal bands from Sweden and especially from Grave, Entombed, Carnage and Dismember.
  The material is top notch, with some real classic tracks that the band still performs to this day, and an excellent production effort. Fans of Unleashed, and of death metal in general, will find a lot to like about Shadows in the Deep. Recommended!
